I had lunch at a new place in Arlington on West Pioneer/ Hwy 303 called Al Amir. No, not related to the Dallas restaurant. It has only been open for about a week. The food is fabulous and reasonably priced. They have live music (I did see evidence of equipment to that effect) and when I asked if they had a dancer(s) I was told they were interested and did I know any. They seemed surprised that there might be dancers in the south half of the meteroplex. No...I did not ask about pricing, but said I would let it be known of their interest. They are located between Fielder and Bowen and if you are traveling west on Hwy 303, they will be on the right. 2349 W. Pioneer Pkwy. (817) 349-5499. Sorry, he did give his name with the contact info.

Mon, March 30, 2009 - 9:28 AMI drove by the restaurant this weekend. There were a lot of cars there. I was curious if it was connected with the Dallas restarant - thanks for the info. I'll have to check out the food since I don't live too far from there. -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Fri, April 3, 2009 - 9:40 PMI have been checking out the ME restaurants in the south. I was thinking about organizing an informal music and dance gathering on the South side of the metroplex. Just for socializing, playing music together, dancing and sharing ideas. It seems that most events are in the North and don't offer the opportunity to play /work on music together and for the dancers. I had been considering Seido's, on Carrier just north of I-20, easy access, nice atmosphere, great food but a limited menu. Although Seido's hosts parties and other events, they only have a small sound system for DVDs.
This restaurant would also be a great place for that. I would be interested in the opinion of anyone else who goes to check it out. Any thoughts on the music and dance gathering?????? Thumbs up or down on that idea? -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sat, April 4, 2009 - 5:26 AMOne depends on what you mean by music. If its 27 people on drum and a ney I dont really consider that a music opportunity, unless the ney has a stack of Marshall amps and speakers. If percussion outnumbers any melody instrument like Custer last stand its really futile. This is my opinion you can do what you want. I think I speak for my band and between work and family we just dont have spare time to do an informal gathering of all the local musicians. Also I would think for melody to play songs together everyone would have to be pretty well versed in any of the songs. Some people have listened to songs and written their own versions. We play our songs like you hear on most cd's. I think Cybele has three songs on their list we know. Now again whether we play them the same is another thing. As far as I know in our community there are Matt, Dargonia and Mary who play melody. I know Alan is working with a stringed instrument of sorts but I do not know if he is performing with it yet. Someone in Isis group plays violin? I think getting all of them together in the same place is going to be a trick. I am not saying it couldnt happen I am just speaking as someone who has to schedule two melody musicians and its not always easy to get both of them together. -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sat, April 4, 2009 - 9:54 AMThanks for your input Sean. Some very valid points. I have heard this is done in other communities and goes by the name of Jalsa. Everyone learns a chosen piece of sheet music, on their own time. Considering the variety of instruments that are played amongst the community, a collaborative effort would be quite impressive. We have a complete emsemble when you put everyone together. There is a lot of talent in our community:
keyboards, clarinet, zurna, violin, Cebele has a Turkish Oud player, Alan has been learning the oud and has a new stringed instrument he is working with and Aaron plays the violin, a variety of percussive instruments, I prefer zills.
Perhaps a well known piece favored by dancers, that each group could learn individually, from the same sheet music. Once learned could be played by each individual 'band' or together as a group. Each instrument taking a turn at taxim. We would still have to get together (Jalsa)a few times and dancers can come to have fun with us. I am sure it would take a year, with everyone's busy schedules. It could be performed at an NTMEDA or Ya Halla event. If everyone agreed to the piece and learned it from the same sheet music. What 3 pieces crossover for W&F/Cebele? It could be a starting point.
Of course, collaborating is a challenge considering personalities and schedules.
Back to the original topic...I would be interested to hear about Belinda and Tamadur's experience at this new place. I definitely plan to go back for the great food. -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sat, April 4, 2009 - 1:02 PMOn the other hand....it might be like herding cats :) -
-
Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sat, April 4, 2009 - 1:14 PMHerding Cats would be very very easy compared to getting the schedules of musiciansfrom different bands to be able to come together. It is hard enough for one band to get its members together. Then there is the, sad but true, issue of egos. Then in addition to the talent you will need volunteers to do all the other work that goes on behind the scenes and especially the grunt work. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sat, April 4, 2009 - 1:15 PMBut I agree with Sean...it can be done but someone has to want to deal with all the challenges of organizing it. -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sat, April 4, 2009 - 2:05 PMThe Jalsa is basically a drum jam only with musicians. It's organized by one person using, in the case of Istar, Melissa's music. Everyone gets a copy according to their instrument and attempts to play.
I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet.
Back to the restaurant, they don't have a band. It's Arabic karaoke I think. The manager seems more interested in attracting the younger crowd. Nice place though and very, very good food.
Sean, you couldn't be more right about the number of percussion verses melody instruments. I've learned to never take the clarinet to a drum jam -- like taking a knife to a gun fight -- it never works. As well as sometimes the melody instruments have to be careful of drowning each other out, as I've experienced with our oud player. I can easily overpower him.
I'm also not so sure that the restaurant would be the best place to have a bunch of people who've never played together as a group before, have one big train wreck in front of a lot of customers. :)

Sat, April 4, 2009 - 3:07 PMWell, my house certainly isn't big enough and my spouse has a strong dislike and little tolerance of my ME habit. So much for herding cats, I never was very good on horseback LOL -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sun, April 5, 2009 - 7:25 AMI'd do it. It's about the music, folks. -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sun, April 5, 2009 - 10:28 AMUnless there is a significant 'buy-in' by the ME musician community, it will be nearly insurmountable. Two drummers a Jalsa does not make :(
However, if we want a casual Sunday afternnon get together, to eat good food to showcase our sets for available dancers, that would be fun. Just that alone would take some weeks to facilitate. It might be a shot in the arm for this nice little restaurant, too.
BTW, I am also working on a community service project for retirement centers and LTC facilities. I am waiting to hear back from the Home for Aged Masons in Arlington and another facility in the HEB area. If anyone is interested in entertaining the elderly, let me know. It is great to bring a smile to their faces. It is strictly philanthropic. With the budget cuts, most of the places have precious little funds. -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sun, April 5, 2009 - 1:29 PMMaybe we need to have more drummers give up the drum and switch to melody, We have six meody musicians to what 400 hundred drummers in the DFW area ha

Sun, April 5, 2009 - 5:03 PMI guess I'll have to locate one of those "take number' gadgets..."now serving drummers # 289-291" LOL. Todd may have to drag out his oboe, te-he-he. -

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Sun, April 5, 2009 - 5:10 PMAbout the best I could do would slow as molassas. I would be counting the lines and spaces: Every Good Boy Does Fine and, All Cars Eat Gas (or Cows Eat Grass if you are from the country) I will stick to zills or maybe riqq ;-)

Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 8:15 AMYou know, Deede. We could do the community service project you are thinking of, through PURE. That's what it's there for. Right now, PURE DFW is dying because no one will show, even though countless invitations have gone out to everyone in the community. We don't have to do the PURE choreography. We could do any choreo that the members want.
All they have to do is show up. -
-
Re: Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 8:18 AMRight now, the next PURE meeting is May 3rd, 3:30. Bring your ideas, your hip skirt and/or your drum. -
