I had lunch at a new place in Arlington on West Pioneer/ Hwy 303 called Al Amir. No, not related to the Dallas restaurant. It has only been open for about a week. The food is fabulous and reasonably priced. They have live music (I did see evidence of equipment to that effect) and when I asked if they had a dancer(s) I was told they were interested and did I know any. They seemed surprised that there might be dancers in the south half of the meteroplex. No...I did not ask about pricing, but said I would let it be known of their interest. They are located between Fielder and Bowen and if you are traveling west on Hwy 303, they will be on the right. 2349 W. Pioneer Pkwy. (817) 349-5499. Sorry, he did give his name with the contact info.

  • so what evidence did they have of a band? Sound gear and mics, keyboards, drums other instruments?
    • Sound gear, keyboard, mics etc.
      • I'll run by there and find out about the band. I work in Central Arlington anyway. It's right up my alley.
        • I have been checking out the ME restaurants in the south. I was thinking about organizing an informal music and dance gathering on the South side of the metroplex. Just for socializing, playing music together, dancing and sharing ideas. It seems that most events are in the North and don't offer the opportunity to play /work on music together and for the dancers. I had been considering Seido's, on Carrier just north of I-20, easy access, nice atmosphere, great food but a limited menu. Although Seido's hosts parties and other events, they only have a small sound system for DVDs.

This restaurant would also be a great place for that. I would be interested in the opinion of anyone else who goes to check it out. Any thoughts on the music and dance gathering?????? Thumbs up or down on that idea?
          • One depends on what you mean by music. If its 27 people on drum and a ney I dont really consider that a music opportunity, unless the ney has a stack of Marshall amps and speakers. If percussion outnumbers any melody instrument like Custer last stand its really futile. This is my opinion you can do what you want. I think I speak for my band and between work and family we just dont have spare time to do an informal gathering of all the local musicians. Also I would think for melody to play songs together everyone would have to be pretty well versed in any of the songs. Some people have listened to songs and written their own versions. We play our songs like you hear on most cd's. I think Cybele has three songs on their list we know. Now again whether we play them the same is another thing. As far as I know in our community there are Matt, Dargonia and Mary who play melody. I know Alan is working with a stringed instrument of sorts but I do not know if he is performing with it yet. Someone in Isis group plays violin? I think getting all of them together in the same place is going to be a trick. I am not saying it couldnt happen I am just speaking as someone who has to schedule two melody musicians and its not always easy to get both of them together.
            • Thanks for your input Sean. Some very valid points. I have heard this is done in other communities and goes by the name of Jalsa. Everyone learns a chosen piece of sheet music, on their own time. Considering the variety of instruments that are played amongst the community, a collaborative effort would be quite impressive. We have a complete emsemble when you put everyone together. There is a lot of talent in our community:
keyboards, clarinet, zurna, violin, Cebele has a Turkish Oud player, Alan has been learning the oud and has a new stringed instrument he is working with and Aaron plays the violin, a variety of percussive instruments, I prefer zills.
Perhaps a well known piece favored by dancers, that each group could learn individually, from the same sheet music. Once learned could be played by each individual 'band' or together as a group. Each instrument taking a turn at taxim. We would still have to get together (Jalsa)a few times and dancers can come to have fun with us. I am sure it would take a year, with everyone's busy schedules. It could be performed at an NTMEDA or Ya Halla event. If everyone agreed to the piece and learned it from the same sheet music. What 3 pieces crossover for W&F/Cebele? It could be a starting point.

Of course, collaborating is a challenge considering personalities and schedules.

Back to the original topic...I would be interested to hear about Belinda and Tamadur's experience at this new place. I definitely plan to go back for the great food.
