Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 10:14 AMI'd like to try again next spring to have Carmine Guida. He's a lot of fun doing "dancind with drummers classes". He needs a dance teacher with some experience to help him. We can con-join with the Houston folks, Ayana, and/or some one from Austin, and share the flight expenses that way. He like to do two two-hour classes, and a drum jam/hafla sort of thing in the evening.

Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:55 AMI love Aziza (from Canada?)...she'll be here in August for Ya Halla Y'all. However, I don't think I'll get to take from her then.
How does it work with all the area workshops and how you decide to bring in someone? What do you consider for too close of an overlap?
Thanks for polling!!!!!

Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 1:14 PMAva came to Isis' studio awhile ago. She's so amazing. I really love her.
But if it were a fist to cuffs between Ava and Zahra, I'd go for Zahra. I have a shrine made to her in my dance space. Oh wait, the restraining order says I can't call it that. LOL!!!!
Zahra rocks and she always makes me feel like a star. I'd cancel lessons to spend time with her. I keep thinking if I stand close enough her dance style will rub off......

Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 2:13 PMCassandra from Minneapolis . . . I am going down to Houston at the end of May to take a workshop from her for the first time in many years (as Sirrom School). She is on my list of top teachers/performers . . .Egyptian style. I went to Oasis Dance Camp a couple of times because I like her so much and she isn't in this part of the country too often.
Not sure if Isis has brought her to Ya Halla.
Another one to consider . . . Jasmin jahal from Chicago . . . another great teacher and lots of fun!! -
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 2:22 PMI do love Cassandra and she's very well versed in the folkloric arena as well. there is this zar of her on IAMED V 1 and it's amazing. Complety entranced with her on that one!
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 2:34 PMI know I have Jasmin on my list too! Though she was just in Austin last year! ;-) -
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 3:06 PMI'd like to second the vote for Yasmina... love her!!
would also love to take from Casandra as I haven't had the chances.
Love Ava and Aziza to death and would follow Aziza around the globe if I could afford it.
How bout Bahaia? Even if we get to travel down to Austin and take a class its not the same as doing a whole weekend workshop... but then I'd also follow B around the globe... or at least down to Austin ;-) -
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 8:32 PMI say yes to Bahaia I love her drum solo's she has her very own laid back but powerful style to them. I would love to have an all day workshop on her drum solo style. Tamra Henna also would rock with a leb style drum solo class. -
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 8:35 PMIsidora Bushkovski is pretty fabulous -
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:01 AMI forgot . . . TamraHenna from Los Angeles!!! She teaches so well and I've enjoyed both workshops I've had with her.
Bahaia had her in Austin a few years ago.
She was at Cairo Nights (Little Egypt) last year . . . but only taught the 2 hr classes but both were well worth it. One class was baladi vs classical egyptian where she taught how the same movements would be used differently in those styles . . . she tricked us and had us doing a full dance at the end of the class by putting together combinations of the movements she taught, lol!!! -
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 5:03 PMI second the Tamra Henna of California suggestion. I took her class at Hot a few years ago but I wasn't quite "ready" for it then, and i would love to have another shot. She taught a really hard cane routine (at least, I sure thought it was hard then, Rasha?) anyway, yeah. Tamra Henna.
But honestly, if you bring anyone that I haven't seen in a while (that I know of) and doesn't come to town much, I'd go for sure. -
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 10:00 PMYes, January, I agree. It was hard...fun but hard! I'd love to take from her again though. I think the top of my list of the ones discussed is Michelle Joyce. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 5:26 AMMichelle Joyce and/or Sandra would be fantastic.
I'm hosting her at Camparet this year, but Princess Farhana has a lot of workshop subjects to teach, and she's a very fun, dynamic person.
Oh, and VIRGINIA! She needs to come back to Texas.

Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:20 PMOh and I forgot...
Belly Queen!
You could have Amar and Kaeshi teach both Cabaret and Tribal Fusion (bring the community together!) and then have their awesome troupe featured in the show!
For something a little different!..... -
-
Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:23 PMKaeshi was here last year for Dare to Dream. She's a wonderful teacher!

Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 1:34 PMTiraz Dance Network in Virginia brought in Lisa Zahiya last year and plan to bring her back this November. She is very well versed in tribal, Egyptian, and fusion, particularly hip-hop. I think she's a real jewel. She won Belly Dancer of The Universe-Fusion this year.

And Sa'diyya- I can't believe you went to a weeklong with Aziza! So jealous. I love her. I only got three hours with her but it was great.

Re: workshop instructors? (x-post)
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 3:19 AMSa'diyya-I wanted Tiraz to bring you up, but flights from NC are a lot cheaper than flights from TX...
Maybe we will be far enough from a zero balance one day... -
