I am a registered dietitian and have had a few dancers in our area recently come to me for nutrition and diet advice. (I know I still owe you a packet of info my dear *wink*)
I know that there are more dancers or even musicians in our area that have questions about food, nutrition and dieting and I want to help. I would like to put together a workshop where I can talk about dieting, health and nutrition and answer questions for those that are interested.
I am not sure what kind of venue would be best for everyone interested or what we would need to offer to drum up (nice pun...) enough attendance. However, I would like to try. I am chalk full of information on food, nutrition and diet and I want to help squash some of the misconceptions behind what people see in the media. I have tons of handouts and I can answer questions and concerns you have.
Here are a couple of ideas I had:
* Rent a space at my office in south Fort worth and do a regular classroom presentation with powerpoint, handouts etc. Possibility of having the session catered.
* Rent a space at one of the Al Amir restaurants during the morning or early afternoon on a weekend and do a more relaxed presentation with food catered by the restaurant. Powerpoint and handouts are still included.
* Add the nutrition workshop on the back of a dance workshop. This would be in a studio but could still involve handouts and such. It would be a full afternoon on a weekend of a dance workshop (to be determined) ending with some catered snacks and the nutrition presentation.
If you would be an interested party....what venue would make you most interested in attending? What else could I provide to ensure you get your money's worth?
You can also email me at yelisbelly@yahoo.com
thanks!

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:17 AMI, of course, am in. *wink* Where ever you decide is fine. I do love the idea of having a projector available for PowerPoint as I am a very visual learner. But any venue is perfectly acceptable to me. I'll be there. -

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:31 AMThat would've been an interesting offering for the teacher showcase. While not necessarily dance related, I think we all know how our body image is when it comes to dancing. I would be interested in attending provided there was time in my schedule. -

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 4:05 PMWhether one has a weight issue or not, nutrition plays a vital role in disease prevention and aging gracefully. There are too many risky food fads and misconceptions. Not every one has ready access to an RD unless they are already having issues and are referred by a physician. I think it is a great idea and would be supportive.

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:41 AMI think one avenue could be taken to specifically address the nutritional needs of the athletes that dancers are. Such as, the nutritional needs that most people have in the different phases of training: before and after dance class; the other days of the week. What, when, how much to eat during intensive workshops. What to eat to alleviate the pre-performance jitters, and what to eat after a performance.
Some folks take a much lessor athletic approach than others. Some go to class once or twice a week, and attend to other matters the rest of the week. Some folks are constantly doing something, yoga, other types of dance, drills, choreography work, all throughout their day and week. Folks go on training cycles, as well. There is also the all-important "cheat day". :-) Our bodies usual have different nutritional demands.
Does that make sense? It seems to be true in my experience, anyway. -

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:03 PMI would definitely consider touching on those aspects of a dancer's diet also.
Thanks. -

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:37 PMYou mean having a few shots to deal with pre-performance jitters isn't the way to go? Man, I've really been effing it up all these years! :) -

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:45 PMJust because you are drinking it, doesn't mean it's not in your diet! HAHAHAHA!
(You think I'm being funny. A beer and four advil after a soccer game is one of the best things I ever found for muscle spasms. ) -

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Sun, April 12, 2009 - 7:19 AMI feel like I know plenty about diet & nutrition - my problem is meal planning. If anyone could help me with that I would kiss the ground under their feet.
As dancers I think a lot of us are living double (or triple) lives as workday professionals, homemakers/parents and dancers. Nutrition can take a back seat under those circumstances. Last year I got crazy busy and ended up basically eating nothing but fast food out of paper bags for 2 weeks straight. As a DIRECT result of that diet I developed an injury and set myself back as dancer for quite some time. I'm still in recovery. But it's not that I didn't know how to eat well, I just thought I didn't have the time.
So if there was a meal prep / planning class that presented fast and healthful meal options (I am sooo tired of my current recipes) I would be interested. -

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Sun, April 12, 2009 - 7:39 AMI like Dee's idea as well. I'm in the same boat. I feel tired all of the time but I need to find a way to eat better and not be home a lot. Plus with show season starting there will be tons of early mornings and late afternoons for me at horse shows. And they concessions don't really think ahead when they bring hot dogs!!!

Re: OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?
Sun, April 12, 2009 - 8:11 AMThat could easily be covered in the class!
I have a ton of ideas I could share.
