Two multi-day workshops this spring featuring well-regarded instructors taking an extensive anthropological approach to the folkloric dances of Egypt, with certificate upon completion.

Learn to Belly Dance

Join us and enjoy the spirit of the dance and the special people in our program. Our emphasis is on learning and executing dance steps with accuracy, flexibility, grace and poise. Movement and rhythms guide this dance that is shared among women throughout time and accross continents.

Authentic Belly Dancing Academy Class Descriptions

Beginner Belly Dance:
Our beginner classes are structured to allow students to develop at their own pace. You will learn to develop a sound foundation for belly dancing. We'll explore different music and rhythms (i.e., Egyptian, Arabic, Turkish, etc.) that make this dance so beautiful. You will build a stronger physical body with flexibility and endurance, learn dance history and feminine artistic expressions, and discover the joy of movement. You will need to master the steps outlined in the beginner classes before moving on to our intermediate belly dance classes.

Intermediate Belly Dance:
In this class, you will expand your repertoire of dance steps, rhythm knowledge, and music vocabulary. While learning graceful transitions between moves and fun combinations, you will also learn the framework for building exciting choreographies by enhancing your skills in layering movements, level changes, directional changes, and emphasizing and de-emphasizing movement to match the music. This class includes an introduction to the use of props such as veil, candle, and sword. You will need to master this class before moving into our advanced belly dance class. Instructor approval needed for enrollment in this class.

Intermediate Zill Drill Class:
This unique zill drill class, which is included in both intermediate belly dance classes, will help you become proficient in playing various zill patterns (i.e., beledi, kashlimar, chiftetelli, bolero, and other variations of the 4/4, 9/8, 6/8, and 2/4 patterns). You will need to master this class before moving into the advanced/performance group.

Advanced Belly Dance / Performance Class:
Get exposed to sophisticated steps and skilled layering techniques. Students in this class must have the fundamental ability to play zills while dancing. Strength building and mastery of transitions in footwork and body isolations is emphasized here. We explore the explosive, dynamic isolations required for drum solos! This class can be an aggressive workout. Advanced work with props such as veil, candle, and sword technique is taught. Members of this group will master advanced choreographies, performance skills, costuming, and the world of entertainment protocol and professionalism. Enrollment in this class is by invitation only.

Arabic rhythm drum circle

Hi Guys -
Ok, so there are these great drum circles out there that do west African based rhythms. They are fun to go to & just ask for a small donation to give to the studio that hosts the circle but they don't play Arabic rhythms...

So has me thinking about putting together an Arabic Drum circle that would meet once a month for drummers & dancers - Is there any interest in something like this???

I was thinking it would be great to do so dancers & drummer would have an open no pressure kinda atmosphere to play, zil & dance to build performance skills for all parties involved

We would probably do this on the 2nd Saturday of the month starting in January and would float the locations to accommodate the distances folks would have to drive

Thoughts, comments???

FREE Bellydance Workshop!

As many of you know, Danza della Luna is in the works of producing an instructional DVD - our winning prize from the 2009 Choreography Project in Austin, TX hosted by Rick Fink and Z-Helene. Danza della Luna is offering a free workshop to the first 8 people who pre-order the DVD! This class will take place on Wednesday November 4, 2009, at 7pm - 8:30pm at Sa’diyya’s home-studio in Frisco. (Prerequisite: At least 6 mos. of bellydance classes needed to attend.) It is a "teaser" workshop meant to share a few parts of the featured choreography (“Yearning” by Raul Ferrando from “Angelika Unveiled”) that will be on the DVD. What a great way to get some extra, detailed, undivided instruction (There will be 6 instructors for 8 attendees!)!

Why, yes! Yes you are!!!

I am one of the members of 4 Wench Productions and we produce an event called “Tribal Alchemy”. Now I know many of you think because of the word “tribal”, this event has nothing to offer to YOU. This would be incorrect.

What is Alchemy? By definition, alchemy is “ A medieval chemical philosophy having as its asserted aims the transmutation of base metals into gold, the discovery of the panacea, and the preparation of the elixir of longevity. “ How this translates to US is the mixture of different elements of dance and music to create something entirely new.

We offer affordable workshops, 36.00 each (which are approximately one week’s worth of fast food for most) and these workshops are instructed by some of the most sought after teachers around.

For the musicians, we have with us this year Mr. Dave Hall, who has toured with Solace Live and himself has been a drumming instructor for over 15 years. He has a vast knowledge base and much to offer.

For dancers who are not primarily of the “tribal” persuasion, one of our most requested an instructor (returning for a THIRD year) is Mira Betz. Her knowledge base is SO vast; it would fill this page to list every workshop topic she works with. She has taught workshops on Moroccan folkloric dance with us and this year is offering TWO very different workshops (one on improvisation skills and the other is all about the Taxeem!)

We have SOOZ, who is Fat Chance certified coming to share the ATS goodness. We have Theatrical bellydance, we have Belladonna bringing her unbelievable SWORD skills to teach. The list goes on and on!

The fact is, most bellydancers (no matter what style they fall into) use the same dance vocabulary. Our event offers the chance to learn some new ways to USE those moves, perhaps give you a FRESH view of your dance, and maybe turn you on to something you might not have previously been willing to try.

For 36.00 and a few short hours of your time, you can get a glimpse of something new and maybe start to figure out how some dancers “do that stuff”.

Most importantly, this event is NON PROFIT and benefits Safe Haven of Tarrant County. This center is a shelter and provides assistance for women and children who are affected by domestic violence. If anyone knows of dancers in the Kileen area or anyone willing to drive to Kileen for a semi-regualr gig, I am trying to staff a club there with dancers.

They are looking for shows on Thursday and Saturday nights. It's a Latin club in the Kileen area that wants to offer bellydance shows. Pay is negotiable and we are looking for experienced dancers, not beginning students. If someone wanted to travel there and stay overnight, that is also an option that can be arranged.

Tribal Fusion is a beautiful, expressive, and highly stylized genre of bellydance. Part 1 of the tribal fusion class will focus on some of the basic moves that characterize tribal fusion bellydance. We will also utilize core strengthening techniques that will help us build stamina, and increase our grace, strength, flexibility, and muscle control. Some exercises will be done on the floor, so it will be helpful to bring a yoga mat! Concepts will be introduced with short combinations to take home. Part 2 of the class will continue to build on the techniques and use them in a complete choreography.

best type of cover up??

I am searching for the right cover up for performing - tired of tucking a piece of fabric into my bra straps and having to mess with it all evening cos it keeps falling down.

I've been searching Ebay cos I figured I could find one reasonably priced and there are some cool ones there. However, I need advice from actual dancers about the practicality of different cover ups. Considering that most of them seem to slip over your head, how do you get out of them without mussing up your hair, makeup, and/or costume?

I've searched the following keywords: caftan(kaftan), galabeya, jilbab, and abaya. The caftan seems to be the largest of them all and maybe makes it easier to remove, but I don't like the way most of those look.

Advice? Should I just sew my own and add a zipper somewhere?

Also, have you found that certain materials are preferable? (ie. cotton usually keeps the body cooler than synthetic fabrics)

Vagabond Cirque- Call for Drummers and Other Musicians!

Woo hoo! We're doing it again this year! Vagabond Cirque will be on September 19, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to midnight (or thereafter) at Avant Garden. Last year over 200 people attended this event to support HAWC.

This year, we will be raising money for Texas Children's Hospital to honor Caitlyn Bibeau, daughter of Bonnie and Brian Bibeau. Caitlyn passed away after only eleven hours after her birth due to a tumor almost 12-inches in size.

So we need to make this year even bigger and better than last year. And that means we need more MUSIC!
If you are a drummer or Middle Eastern/ East Indian/Jazz/ Vaudeville/ something else really awesome musician, please contact me either here on Tribe or at naribellydance@yahoo.com

We already have five musical acts, but with four areas offering some form of entertainment throughout the night, we need a few more. We would like musicians who are interested in performing at least two sets and can perform with dancers and/or alone.
We especially need drummers to play throughout the night and lead a drum jam at the end of the event.

You will receive a goodie bag, free food, acccess to a green room, and LOTS of exposure. The event is certain to be larger than it was last year and it is TONS of fun!

I hope to share the big top with some of you at this year's Vagabond Cirque!

She is based in Seattle right now and does a lot of different folkloric styles. I'm kinda leaning a bit towards doing more folkloric to round out my dance background.

I've started Sahra Saeeda's Journey to Egypt intensives (1 and 2 have been completed . . . JtE2 was in San Diego a week ago) but am also looking at other teachers.

I suggested Khadeja and Mustapha for Ahlan Cairo Nights and, based on the feedback, they were well received. I kinda hoped that would happen since I loved them so much when I attended workshops taught by them a few years ago. I wish it was easier to get them back in this area but flying 2 ppl from Germany is expensive. I had so much fun in the Nubian class this time and wish I could have squeeze in more classes (alas, Aida and Lubna are favorites too along with Zahra!!).

So just wondering if anyone else might be interested in Helene. Even a few ppl, we might be able to bring her in for a small intensive if there is enough interest.

Vagabond Cirque 2009!

This year's Vagabond Cirque is in honor of Caitlyn Bibeau and will benefit Texas Children's Hospital.

Caitlyn developed a sacrococcygeal teratoma in her fourth month of development. Her parents, Bonnie and Brian Bibeau, were given the option to terminate Bonnie's pregnancy, as the possibility of Caitlyn's survival was somewhat slim.

But Bonnie and Brian are fighters, and chose to take the chance that Caitlyn might survive. At 37 weeks, the tumor had grown to almost twelve inches and Bonnie was forced to deliver via C-section on March 20, 2009. Caitlyn lived for eleven hours before her little body gave out.
Bonnie and Brian have slowly begun their recovery, supported by many friends and family members.
Bonnie and Brian are honored to have this event held in memeory of their beloved Caitlyn, and have chosen Texas Children's Hospital as the beneficiary.

11:30 – 1pm 3D Isolations by Obsidia:
Bellydancers all know the fundamental movements: maya, taxeem, chest circles, etc. In this workshop, Obsidia gives you the tools to begin developing the foundation for EXTREME isolations that push these movements beyond the "norm" as if you are moving INTO the audience. You will learn a few short combinations that utilize this new found expansion of isolations. Drilling and discussion of the pertinent muscles used will be done. Bring a notebook.

Here is some information about the performace space:
~Ceiling height: 16' from floor to bottom of truss
~Stage flooring: 3/4" plywood raised on 1x4 slats. Covered by 1/8" tempered hardboard. (As soon as we get the seating configuration we will let you know of the stage area. Don't worry you will not have a little stage in the middle of the room as shown in the picture )
~Dressing rooms are availabe but please come prepared as much as possible because space is limited.
~No fire or animals are allowed in the show.
There are limited spaces so please send in your application as soon as possible

In this economic climate it is difficult for everyone to make ends meet... this is just as true for not-for-profit groups.

To help Kismet continue to provide our open stage that does not charge dancers to perform, we have two fundraisers at the July 25th event: we are selling flowers for $3 each so that you can buy a flower to give to a dancer to show your appreciation, and we are also having a 50/50 raffle.

In addition to our normal raffle, we will make available Raffle Tumbler Img50/50 raffle tickets that anyone can buy for $1 each. At the end of the night, we will draw for the winner of the raffles and the winner of the 50/50 raffle gets half of the money raised by the sale of the 50/50 raffle tickets. The more tickets bought, the bigger the pot!

Help us continue to provide this wonderful stage for the Dallas area! It is going to be an amazing night. See you there!

Local Arabic song translation services

I have a friend who is trying to make a little extra money right now and would like to offer their translation services to bellydancers and musicians in the community. They have done work for myself and for Wind and Fingers already with great results.

This person is a native of the Middle East and fluent in Arabic (various dialects) and English.

They can do line by line translation and provide some info about the background of the songs or history if necessary - what it means, the feeling of the song, etc....
Cost is $40-$50 depending on song length. I have seen other offers at the same price or higher in other parts of the country.

This has been a great help to me in understanding some of my favorites and also to prepare songs for competition in front of Arabic judges.

You can provide a youtube link or send a song via email. Payment can be via Paypal or cash.

They provide shelters, meal, clothing, education, counseling, medical and dental care and other services that really benefit the community. Last year Tribal Alchemy was able to give a van load of donations to SafeHaven along with some money. Thank you to all that donated! ~Stage flooring: 3/4" plywood raised on 1x4 slats. Covered by 1/8" tempered hardboard. (As soon as we get the seating configuration we will let you know of the stage area. Don't worry you will not have a little stage in the middle of the room as shown in the picture )
~Dressing rooms are availabe but please come prepared as much as possible because space is limited.
~No fire or animals are allowed in the show.
There are limited spaces so please send in your application as soon as possible

Costumes, etc FOR SALE

As some of you may be aware, I've hung up my zills, "retired" as it were, from my belly dance hobby in preparation for the arrival of a new horse project. So, everything is for sale - dozens of CDs, costumes, props, even a VERY tame snake. Costumes are size 8/10, with bras fitting C-D cups. Music CDs are mostly traditional, but there a few Arabic pop as well as tribal selections.

Everything will be on display at the NTMEDA Garage Sale in Grapevine on the 21st of June at very attractive prices. If you have any questions or want more information/photos, I will be happy to send you what I can in advance.

About Delmar:

After attending the University of Texas in San Antonio to pursue basketball, Delmar's focus turned to dance. She enrolled in a hip hop class at a local studio, and shortly after was invited to audition for the San Antonio Spurs dance team. After one year with the Spurs, she went on to make a name for herself in the Tejano music entertainment industry. She was featured in music videos, live concerts, television shows, and she also toured and choreographed for several Latin recording artists.

Delmar’s passion for dance brought her to Dallas, where she sought to study and educate herself in the many forms of dance that were not available to her in San Antonio. She auditioned for the Dallas Mavericks dance team and was chosen out of 600 ladies to represent the Dallas Mavericks. Her talent was quickly recognized, and she was recruited to choreograph for the team in her first year as a dancer. Since then she has earned a reputation as being one of the most versatile and professional dancers in the metroplex. For the past five years she has toured across the country performing in venues in Las Vegas, New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, and everywhere in between. Her professional work includes the Nickelodeon Go For It tour, the Femme Fatales tour, the Body Art Ball tour, Texas lottery commercials, and industrials for companies such as Dillard’s, Sam’s Club, Sherwin Williams, Pepsi, Special Olympics, and Farouk Hair Systems.

Her choreography is highly sought after, and she has created award winning choreography for Sam Houston State University, the University of Texas in Arlington, the Miss Latina USA pageant, Shepton High School, Highland Park High School, the Dallas Mavericks, the San Antonio Spurs, the Dallas Power House of dance Performing Company and several cheerleading schools. In 2006 she was one of only a few dancers chosen by Gil Duldaloa (choreographer to Janet Jackson) to attend a private audition for Janet Jackson in Los Angeles. In 2008 she auditioned and was selected by Lisette Bustamante (choreographer to Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears) to receive a scholarship to train at Debbie Reynolds dance studio in Los Angeles. At the time, she was also discovered by a talent scout, and was offered a contract for representation from one of the top talent agencies in Los Angeles.

This workshop will briefly discuss the history of the classic pin-up girl of 40's and 50's will introduce some of the noted pin-up models and artists of the era. Michelle will demonstrate how to incorporate vintage fashion, classic pin-up poses, and facial expressions into tribal fusion bellydance.

Following the lecture portion of the class, the dance section will include a warm-up, a demonstration of various pin-up poses, and a brand new tribal fusion choreography with a pin-up girl flair.

OT - Nutrition and dieting workshop?

I am a registered dietitian and have had a few dancers in our area recently come to me for nutrition and diet advice. (I know I still owe you a packet of info my dear *wink*)

I know that there are more dancers or even musicians in our area that have questions about food, nutrition and dieting and I want to help. I would like to put together a workshop where I can talk about dieting, health and nutrition and answer questions for those that are interested.

I am not sure what kind of venue would be best for everyone interested or what we would need to offer to drum up (nice pun...) enough attendance. However, I would like to try. I am chalk full of information on food, nutrition and diet and I want to help squash some of the misconceptions behind what people see in the media. I have tons of handouts and I can answer questions and concerns you have.

Here are a couple of ideas I had:
* Rent a space at my office in south Fort worth and do a regular classroom presentation with powerpoint, handouts etc. Possibility of having the session catered.

* Rent a space at one of the Al Amir restaurants during the morning or early afternoon on a weekend and do a more relaxed presentation with food catered by the restaurant. Powerpoint and handouts are still included.

* Add the nutrition workshop on the back of a dance workshop. This would be in a studio but could still involve handouts and such. It would be a full afternoon on a weekend of a dance workshop (to be determined) ending with some catered snacks and the nutrition presentation.

If you would be an interested party....what venue would make you most interested in attending? What else could I provide to ensure you get your money's worth?

Lebanese Restaurant in So. Arlington Interested in Dancers

I had lunch at a new place in Arlington on West Pioneer/ Hwy 303 called Al Amir. No, not related to the Dallas restaurant. It has only been open for about a week. The food is fabulous and reasonably priced. They have live music (I did see evidence of equipment to that effect) and when I asked if they had a dancer(s) I was told they were interested and did I know any. They seemed surprised that there might be dancers in the south half of the meteroplex. No...I did not ask about pricing, but said I would let it be known of their interest. They are located between Fielder and Bowen and if you are traveling west on Hwy 303, they will be on the right. 2349 W. Pioneer Pkwy. (817) 349-5499. Sorry, he did give his name with the contact info.

So, I have finally been able to catch my breath, get back into the regular monotony of work, and had enough time (without Tribe being down) to get a post up!

I just wanted to personally say Thanks to all that came out to support “Raks into Spring”2009 featuring Zahra Zuhair.

I am sure those that attended can attest to the fact that she is an outstanding, down to earth, instructor and an even more remarkable performer! There were varied levels in the workshops and she was able to make it challenging for the most seasoned performer as well as palpable for even the beginner student.

Oodles of talent from North Texas and beyond graced the stage at Rose Marine theater for our Gala Show. Zahra performed twice, once with Wind and Fingers who added such a wonderful variation with the ambiance of live music.

Again, a VERY sincere, THANKS to all who made our event a success!
